This project, co-financed by the European Union through the Creative Europe programme, proposes to know the stories of the refugees and immigrants themselves in order to provide a vision of this reality in Europe through artistic representations and the material produced during a program of itinerant residences.
Sarah Fdez Deutsch and Isabel Rey Parra of Casa San Cristóbal-Fundación Montemadrid-(co-authors and managers of Autobarrios San Cristobal Project) were behind the RETEST exhibition so it can be- social and cultural production process contextualized to the exhibition site, in this case, the neighborhood of San Cristóbal de los Angeles.
4 countries, 4 festivals, 32 artists, 4 different approaches
The Refest project has brought together four organizations from different countries involved in small and medium-sized festivals that have become spaces for creativity and social debate: the Urban Association and the Balkan Photo Fetival in Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzagovina), the Organ Vida Association and its international Photography festival in Zagreb (Croatia), the Pasaggi Festival in Fano (Italy) and Fundación Montemadrid through Casa San Cristóbal with the Festivalito of Villaverde (FAV) in Madrid.
Refest has gathered a total of 32 artists, photographers, poets and illustrators-through a nationwide call for each member country of the program-which formed 4 multidisciplinary groups of work composed each of two Bosnian photographers Herzegovina, two photographers from Croatia, two Italian writers and two illustrators from Spain. Each of these groups made a residency in one of the four countries mentioned, collectively investigating a topic of their choice related to refugee and immigration issues. With the works produced there is a travelling exhibition that takes place in each one of the aforementioned festivals.
In the residence of Sarajevo’s residence Vedran Jankovic, Natalia Albéniz, Yeyei Gómez, Midhat Poturovic, Davor Konjikusic, Anil Alessandro Biswas, Amer Kapetanovic and Maria Grazia Calandrone worked around the topic of Home.
At the residence of Fano the work of María Peña, Ishaa Solis, Loris Ferri, Flavia Novelli, Imrana Kapetanovic, Dea Botica, Masa BAJC and Vanda Kljajo focused on women.
In Zagreb Franca Mancinelli, Guergana Radeva, Armin Graca, Carles García O'Dowd, Sara Santana, Maseatpost Kralj, Borko Vukosav and Mitar Simikic collected the footprints of those who travel across the country in search of a future.
In Madrid for 5 days 7 artists worked creatively with immigrant citizens and refugees through meetings and workshops to reflect on their identity.
The Photographers Alma Mujanovic, Katarina Zlatec and Armin Durgut, the Poets Alessandra Racca and Emmanuel di Tommasso and the illustrators Belén Soto and Montserrat Piñeiro worked on the construction of the identity of the refugees, narratives that are created on the Communities and investigated the possibilities of empowerment that the visibility of one's own identity can generate.
Natives of Western Sahara, Mali, Cameroon, Guinea-Conakry, Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Morocco: Said Mahfud, André Marie Moyopo, Linjouom Iliassou, Olivier Bitjoka, Youssouf Diarra and Mamadou Paskal participants in the programmes of the Spanish Committee for Refugees Aid (CEAR), and Said Cherki, Mamadou Bhoye Diallo and Mueez Abid users of Casa San Cristóbal, worked with the artists to build a form of communication of their own history, engaging in the process of creating the story through visual narratives.
The creative process culminated, on the part of the 7 artists, with the final production of a deck of cards through illustration, creative writing, collage and photography.
They have proposed an interpretative framework with which we can look deep into our an other’s identity, with which to confront stereotypes, to break prejudices, to approach, to know and to try to understand us through the game.
There are games already designed by the artists but it is a deck that can contain many others and they can design players interested in fleeing generalizations and open the look.
On Saturday 26th, those who came to the Festivalito of Villaverde to be held under the Bridge of colors of San Cristóbal de los Angeles, found in the space of the Refest a series of tables where they could sit and play with these card decks.
